Worker dies days after fall into tank at central Pa. sewage treatment plant

May 21, 2023

A contractor working on upgrades to Ephrata's sewage treatment plant died two days after suffering injuries when he fell into an empty concrete holding tank on the property.

Roy Bautista, 35, of Mission, Texas, died Saturday of multiple traumatic injuries, the Lancaster County coroner's office said.

Bautista was rushed from the plant on South Reading Road to Lancaster General Hospital last Thursday with unspecified injuries after a rescue effort that took more than an hour to complete.

The accident occurred at 2:24 p.m., according to Ephrata police.

First responders to the scene found that the contractor, part of a crew working to replace roof panels on the clarifier tank at the plant, had fallen from the roof into the tank, which is about 20 feet deep.

Medical professionals used ladders to climb down into the tank and start treating hm. He was then hoisted out by an aerial truck.
