A contractor working on upgrades to Ephrata's sewage treatment plant was badly injured Thursday after a fall into an empty, concrete holding tank on the property at 405 S. Reading Road.

The fall victim, whose name was not being publicly released Thursday night, was rushed from the scene to Lancaster General Hospital with unspecified injuries after a rescue effort that took more than an hour to complete.

No information was immediately available about his condition.

The accident occurred at 2:24 p.m., according to Ephrata police.

First responders to the scene found that the contractor, part of a crew working to replace roof panels on the clarifier tank at the plant, had fallen from the roof structure into the tank, which is about 20 feet deep.

Medical professionals used ladders to climb down into the tank and start treatment to the victim, while crews outside positioned an aerial truck to hoist the victim out.

Police said the circumstances leading to the fall remain under investigation.
