Westfield City Council approves funds for wastewater, trash, technology upgrades

Nov 06, 2023

WESTFIELD — The City Council voted last week to fund public works and technology center projects, due to increased costs in sludge and trash disposal and aging equipment.

A bond order of $3 million to the Department of Public Works Wastewater Division for dewatering equipment upgrades to the Wastewater Treatment Facility was the priciest item.

Councilor Brent Bean, a member of the Finance Committee, said the bond would pay for new equipment and removal of the old dewatering equipment that is 26 years old. He said disposal of sludge has become an issue in the state, with the costs of sludge removal rising and fewer companies bidding on its disposal.
