InnoGear essential oil diffuser — Submitted photo

Recently, I have received a significant number of email inquiries for sample products that I can review. Who am I to refuse to try out a product that may well turn into a great gift idea?

As an online shopper, I find it allows more time for research and comparison. I always turn to unbiased reviews of products that are not usually listed on the seller's site. That said, I recently received the InnoGear Essential Oil Diffuser with a box of six different onepure essential oils. Included in the box were sweet orange, peppermint, tea tree oil, eucalyptus, lavender and lemon grass.

The diffuser comes in either a light or dark tone wood. It also has a light function on it which changes colors and is bright enough to avoid tripping on toys (ahem, Paxton) but dim enough to be soothing. It also offers 4-timer settings and two mist options — strong and light with a timer as well. It can be purchased on amazon.com for $21.

I have purchased diffusers in the past on a whim to see if lavender would help calm my marathon brain at night. My first purchase was a different style diffuser where drops of essential oil are absorbed in a cotton disc and then diffused with a small fan. I don't know that I noticed a calming effect but it certainly helped my bedroom smell better.

I have been considering adding another diffuser in the house because with one dog, three cats and three boys, my house can be…well, stinky. When I installed the InnoGear diffuser, I first used it in the downstairs bathroom. I used the sweet orange scent to help cut through cooking and bathroom smells. The downstairs bathroom is just off the kitchen and everyone enters our home through the door that enters a small foyer that leads to the kitchen. I would prefer to have guests greeted by a pleasant smell.

Having a mist option made the scent carry through those rooms more effectively than the diffuser I have in my bedroom. I decided to relocate the diffuser to my youngest son's bedroom after three nights of pain-riddled sleep as a result of his tonsillectomy. The lights were a bonus in that Paxton has never been a solid sleeper and at age 5, he is scared of the dark.

For the mist, there is a water reservoir that I filled with distilled water. Greenville has notoriously hard water so I want to prevent getting the diffuser clogged. After adding the water, I added 10 drops of lavender and 5 drops of eucalyptus. I figured this combination would be the most soothing.

The light and scent from Paxton's room was calming. I did however, have the dog sleep in my eldest son's bedroom for the night because eucalyptus can be toxic to pets while lavender is not.

I really like this product and it may find a home in my cozy coffee room. With the changing seasons, I am looking into adding other essential oils that will reflect the weather and seasons for an extra touch. I would also seriously consider buying this as a gift. I give this product five out of five stars for appearance, cost and effectiveness.
