Failed valve causes rise in chlorine levels in northeast part of village

Dec 06, 2023

Chlorine levels are back to normal for residents in the northeast part of the Village of Oregon after a valve failure temporarily caused a higher amount of that chemical to leak into the water supply on Wednesday, May 10.

According to a Village of Oregon news release, Village of Oregon Water Utility staff identified a failed valve as the probable cause of the elevated chlorine residual levels at Well Number 3 (680 Hillcrest Drive) and replaced the valve, and the chlorine dosing system has since been tested and found to be operating properly.

Additionally, the village water supply system near Well Number 3 has been flushed, and extensive testing of water from hydrants and Well Number 3 has shown that residual chlorine levels have fallen into the target range. As of 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, Well Number 3 has been reactivated and the village water supply system is fully operational.

On Wednesday morning, a water operator with the Village of Oregon Water Utility noticed that the residual chlorine level in the water supply from Well Number 3 was higher than normal.

Well #3 was immediately shut down and isolated from the system to determine the cause of the increased chlorine injection.

"Water Utility staff will continue to closely monitor the chemical dosing systems at all three village wells," the news release read.
