dimmable gramophone lamp repurposes polycarbonate disc into vinyl-style ambient lighting

Oct 29, 2024

Artyom Alimpiyev’s Gramophone Lamp uses a polycarbonate disc as the face of its dimmable desk torch for vinyl-style ambient lighting. Vinyls’ are no longer exclusive to record players, as seen in the recent Coke Studio’s project where animation sequences play as the discs spin. This time, designer Artyom Alimpiyev plays with the themes of minimalism and retro, and combines them both for his Gramophone Lamp. The lighting design is handcrafted with a function to dim it, so the user can match the glow’s mood with theirs and the space’s.

The Gramophone Lamp by Artyom Alimpiyev is handcrafted with a singular aluminum stand. The base is bent to form a curve and support the lighting design, and it slopes down at the back to uphold the rear part. As the aluminum material moves up, it meets the control functions at the top, showing up as a boxy platform with a trackpad-like surface. Here, the user switches on and off the ambient lighting, and can increase and reduce the brightness of the glow (the brightness control might be touch-sensitive, allowing users to adjust it with a swipe).

A marble PLA encasing is cast onto the handcrafted Gramophone Lamp too. A show-stealer may be through the polycarbonate diffuser disk that recalls the minimalist look of vinyl with its wispy and semi-translucent appearance. It helps magnify the lighting and create a serene spread of the warm beam. For the designer, the ambient lamp is not considered a desk lamp, but rather for atmospheric purposes. In an Instagram comment, Artyom Alimpiyev writes that he imagines his product’s motto to be ‘Give your favorite vinyl a second life!’

so far, the Gramophone Lamp by Artyom Alimpiyev is limited to 100 units

Artyom Alimpiyev’s Gramophone Lamp is rechargeable too with its Lithium Ion 4000mah, which can mean that the user can switch it on without plugging it. Its battery can last up to 24 hours even at its maximum brightness, and it comes with a type-c USB charger and port. So far, its light temperature is set at 3500K or warm white, but additional lighting elements and grades may be added. As of publishing the story, Artyom Alimpiyev tells designboom that his Gramophone Lamp is limited to 100 units and is currently live for orders at around 158 EUR per piece.
