City approves emergency purchase order for WWTP

The Rockport City Council, at its regular meeting Tuesday, May 23, approved the emergency purchase order for equipment to replace a failed rake system in the clarifier at the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP).

According to backup material provided, this equipment will replace an existing rake system that had a catastrophic failure at the WWTP. Immediate replacement is necessary because the WWTP is already without the grit removal system because of a failure of the existing equipment. That equipment has a seven- to nine-month delivery date.

"Without the grit removal system and this rake system we are experiencing higher levels of suspended solids in our treatment process. The delay of getting this rake replaced will lead to exceeding permit levels," said Director of Public Works Mike Donoho.

He said there are no environmental issues with the discharge from the WWTP, but the City is "limping along" (utilizing backup plans not normally used) until the equipment is installed.

Sentry Equipment Company has indicated they could have a system delivered and installed in approximately eight to nine weeks.

(Note: An emergency purchase order was issued on May 16.)

The cost for the equipment is $125,809. The funds for this purchase will come from the operating budget for equipment maintenance and repairs allocated to the WWTP.
